DO YOU DARE TO LOOK IN THE MIRROR?

There is something about self-reflection: you need a mirror. You might catch small reflections from shards of glass or, if you are lucky, get a rare opportunity to stare at yourself in a full-length mirror.

With the shards, it is easy to brush off the cracks that you see and blame it on the size of the glass.

“It is not showing the whole picture,” you say while making excuses for yourself.

“If that hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have made that choice,” you explain to the jury in your head.

Once in a while, you admit that maybe you need some help, and then you make some attempt to put some band-aids on your scars.

Oh, but when you get to stand in front of that full-length mirror, you are left speechless.

You see the whole picture, and you know that you have been quite an asshole.

You cringe as the memories playback in your head, and all of a sudden, you begin to understand why the people who walked away did.

All is not lost, however, because now it is easier to fill in some of the cracks. After all, now you see them as what they are. You ask for help, and you are not as defensive when people call you out.

After a while, people begin to notice and then tell you that something about you has changed. You seem like a better person.

Even you can see it. Flashbacks of the things that you thought were normal sometimes leave you with your mouth wide open

(Fourth wall break: I almost said ajar, but I remembered that my friend told me that it doesn’t mean what I thought it meant. haha)

I hope that you get at least one chance to look at your self in a full-length mirror; to spend time studying every crack, bruise, and scar; to remember every story that goes with it, and to get the chance to decide that you are going to be the best version of yourself.

Finally, I hope that you begin to heal.
